Days 19 and 20: Popular little guys!

We had another weekend full of visiting family and friends.  These little fellas are quite a hit!

I tried to divide my time between the NICU and playing with K, so I didn’t get pictures of everyone.  (Not pictured below are Pop and Nan, Matt and Rachel, & Bob and Nancy).

Specials thanks to Pop and Nan, and Papaw and Nana for keeping K entertained when I needed to be elsewhere.  And to Nana for keeping me company this last week as I gained more strength and independence.

There were no big updates from the weekend. Both boys are absolutely precious, and starting to stir a tiny bit more.  L in particular really seemed to perk up some tonight.  He had his eyes open and looked around for about 30 minutes this evening.  I stayed later than I had planned so I could stare at him.  I can NOT get enough of these guys.

Speaking of no big updates, I think we’re past the point where big things will happen every day, so I will stop the daily updates.  I’ll still post plenty of photos, significant news, and probably weekly updates.   I’ll spend more time on random posts, and less on technical updates.   Thank you for caring about and praying for our boys.

Here are a few of L and N’s fans!

Today was mostly filled with cuddles and smiles.

We did have an update from neurology.  To be honest, I’m having trouble sifting through the information we’ve gotten from 3 different teams.  If you’ve tried reading each post and are confused by whether or not we’ve made progress on the sub clinical seizures…well…I’m confused too.  Today’s discussion was that we were successfully treating clinicals seizures, but hadn’t made real progress on the sub clinicals.  Meanwhile, last weekend we were told the seizures were happening all over their brain.  And this week we were told by a different crew they were only in the lower left area.  So if both assessments were true, I would argue we did make progress.  We’ve also been told at various times that each of the 3 medicines did help, even if only a little.

That’s where Monday’s meeting will be helpful.  At 2:00 we’ll recap the last 9 days of testing and medicating to find out how our main neurology contact feels about the progress.

Until then, this weekend will be filled with visiting friends and family.  Unlike last weekend, the boys are EEG free and ready to be held!

Here’s a look at day 18.

We were also thrilled when daddy arrived.  K will be up to visit tomorrow as well.  I’m looking forward to a weekend with our whole family together!

Day 15: I got my babies back babies back babies back…

Today was a good day.

The boys came off of their EEG.  Just in time too, both boys had a few tender spots from having been on it for nearly 5 days.

Here’s a quick shot of each before we took them off:

Good bye EEG!

Good bye EEG!

We were so glad to be able to get them out and cuddle…so we did just that.  Poor L is still pretty puffy, but he looked better today than he did yesterday.  He still doesn’t look like himself, but he is getting closer.

Nolan is free!

N is free!

Neurology is in agreement that we need to focus on medicines that can be given orally, (and therefore can be useful at home), so we were also able to take out L’s IV today.  They are still trying to figure out if we can do better with the boys’ seizure management.  Both are now taking Topamax as a 3rd medication.    We will do a “short term” EEG later in the week to see if it had any impact.  I know better than to believe it will only last one hour, but hopefully it will be less than five days.  Sometimes…babies just need to be held, and loved like babies.

We took some two week photos today, but I’d really like to give L a chance to look like L before we make those “official”.  They also perked up a lot during the day today, so maybe by tomorrow we’ll be seeing eyes again on a regular basis.

Mom and I went back this evening to give them their baths and change their outfits.  It felt good to do a little bit of “normal”.  And by “good” I mean “fantastic”.  And by “normal” I mean…”NICU Normal”.

Today’s nurse also unhooked L and helped us get the boys side by side.  It was so special to see these precious guys together.
